School Accreditation

You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

The New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists regulates the practice of cosmetologists, barbers, estheticians, and electrologists. If you want to become a licensed cosmetology professional in the state of New Mexico, you must complete the minimum training requirements from an approved program and pass a written and practical licensing examination. New Mexico offers the following licensing options:

  • Cosmetologist: 1,600 training hours
  • Cosmetology Instructor: current cosmetology license + 1,000 training hours
  • Barber: 1,200 training hours
  • Massage Therapist: 650 training hours
  • Electrologist: 600 hours
  • Esthetician: 600 hours
  • Nail Technician: 350 hours
  • Permanent Makeup Artist: 100 training hours

You must renew your cosmetology license on a yearly basis during the month of your birthday. Twelve hours of continuing cosmetology education is required for instructors. While it is not required for other professionals, continuing education is recommended to keep up with current trends and practices.
