School Accreditation

You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

While in courses to prepare you to become a permanent makeup technician, you will earn the basics in skin anatomy and pigmentation and color theory.  Intermediate courses go into more training to prepare you to perform cosmetic procedures such as so applying permanent eyeliner, lip liner, lip color and mascara. Many professionals choose to take advanced courses as well.  This is when you will learn medical tattooing, tattoo removal and areola restoration.

Permanent Makeup Licensing in Virginia

In Virginia, permanent makeup artists are considered to be permanent cosmetic tattooists under the statute. One must meet certain qualifications to apply for a license and sit for the board-approved examination in Virginia. First, the statute requires that students either complete an approved permanent makeup artistry program or complete an approved apprenticeship program in a Virginia tattoo parlor. If you complete an apprenticeship program that is substantially similar to the ones within Virginia, you may also qualify to sit for the board-approved examination.

The other qualifications that individuals must meet include being in good standing as a tattooer in one’s jurisdiction. One must also disclose any other tattoo licenses that he or she holds at the time of application for a license in Virginia. It is also required that applicants disclose a physical residential address, and applicants may not use a post office box. One must also submit any evidence of prior convictions that he or she has to the board.

Career Outlook for Permanent Makeup Artists in Virginia

According to the BLS, general cosmetologists earn an average annual salary of about $28,470 a year. It is expected that cosmetologists will enjoy a slight salary increase in the upcoming years. There are over 12,000 cosmetologists who currently work in Virginia, but the BLS does not offer a breakdown to indicate the number of permanent makeup artists working in the state. Because permanent makeup artistry is still a relatively new profession, it is likely that there is still a high demand for qualified permanent makeup artists in the state.

As a permanent makeup artist, you can earn a salary that has a base of $18,000 for only one procedure completed a week. This means that permanent makeup artistry can serve as a very lucrative part-time or side hobby for you if interested in it. Permanent makeup artistry can also serve as an excellent full-time career choice for you if you decide to open an independent business.
