Overview of Cosmetology Schools and Curriculum in Vermont

If you’re interested in hair styling and the ever changing trends that go along with it, then a career in cosmetology and hair artistry is great for you. In school you will learn how to maintain healthy hair for your clients along with hair styling, hair coloring and hair cutting techniques.  If you are interested in making others look their best in some way, hair design, nail design and esthetics are all avenues that you can explore. In addition to hair care and styling methods, you can focus on nail care, nail artistry, synthetic nail installation and synthetic nail maintenance or esthetic treatments like eyebrow waxing, body waxing, facials and body beauty treatments like wraps and scrubs.  If you are interested in healing others and promoting their well-being, massage would be a good career to explore.  To cater to men, you can obtain a license in barbering, nail care and esthetics.

Cosmetologist Licensing in Vermont

To obtain a license or a beauty practitioner’s certificate, according to the Vermont State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists, you have to attend a state accredited education program for a specified number of hours. Then you must take the State Board Exam for the career field you want to enter. Once you pass your exam, you are licensed to work in the state of Vermont.

Vermont does not require anyone other than instructors to have regular license renewals. However, it is always recommended that you take regular classes to gain further CEU credits so that you can keep up with modern styles and trends in your field. Every odd numbered year (ex. 2013 and 2015), instructors must pay $120 and renew their licenses by completing 24 hours of instruction and re-testing. If you are transferring to Vermont from another state, and your state education requirements meet or exceed those required in Vermont, you will be required to pay a $90 transfer fee and pass the State Laws and Rules Exam in order to work in Vermont.

In order to take the state test for licensing in various fields, you must complete the following course study hours:

– Barbering – 1000 hours
– Cosmetology – 1500 hours
– Master Esthetician – 1200 hours
– Esthetician – 600 hours
– Nails – 400 hours
– Electrologist – 600 hours
– Massage Therapy – Requirements Vary by Municipality
– Cosmetology Instructor – In order to teach, you must have obtained your cosmetology license, have had three years work experience and passed the instructors test.
