You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

Find Your Utah Fashion Design School

There has been a  67% increase in fashion school graduates over the past several years in Utah.  With an average tuition cost of $4,365 per year, scholarships averaging $3,660 per year, and a 95% acceptance rate, Utah is a great place for you to complete your degree program. Typically, most schools will have classes around 20 students per class, making it an ideal state if you learn best with more 1-1 training.  

You have several  universities, colleges and programs from which to choose when deciding where to attend fashion school in Utah. Utah State University offers both B.A. and B.S. degrees within their Family and Consumer Science Department. You can choose concentrations in apparel design, textiles and more. The Bridgerland Applied Technology College lets you earn a certificate in fashion merchandising, which includes classes about the fashion business, textiles, fibers, clothing construction and styling. Students at Bridgerland plan and direct full-scale fashion shows twice a year. The program takes approximately nine months to complete at a cost around $2,000.

Salt Lake Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising. You can focus on design, merchandising or technical apparel creation in this program. Costs for the A.A.S. degree at SLCC are approximately $6,000 for the five-semester program. Books cost another $500. Students who graduate with this A.A.S. degree are ready for careers in the fashion industry or they can transfer to a four-year university. At SLCC you will learn about fashion design and illustration, the history of fashion, draping, pattern-making and sewing along with fashion business skills.

Working in the Utah Fashion Industry

Fashion designers in Utah earn an annual average salary of $43,780 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Salt Lake City designers earn an annual average salary of $44,610.  There are a number of events that you can take part of in order to advance you career.  You may wish to join the Salt Lake Association of Fashion Designers hosts fashion programs and events including Fashion Stroll, a downtown street fashion event including the Style Wars charity fashion shows. The DEX Club at the University of Utah also sponsors a fashion show for charity every year. The SLAFD provides internship and apprenticeships with fashion designer members, and they host a summer Sewing Workshop school to teach students sewing techniques with professional clothiers. Salt Lake City’s biggest fashion event is the Salt Lake City Fashion Week and the included Runway event.  These all allow you numerous opportunities to showcase you work and introduce others to new styles and trends.
