Licensing Requirements for Cosmetology Instructors in South Carolina

The South Carolina Board of Labor Licensing and Regulation will issue your license to work as a cosmetology instructor in the state. In South Carolina, you must have your cosmetology practitioner’s license before you can apply to become an instructor.

Once you have your license, you can train to become an instructor. Your training must consist of either 750 hours of instructor training at a board approved school or work as a licensed cosmetologist for at least two years. You must then complete 45 hours of “Teaching Methods,” training and get your high school diploma or your GED. Once you have enough experience and training, you can submit an application for your instructor’s license and pay your fees.

Before the board issues your license, you must either pass the instructor’s exam or complete an extra five years of licensed work experience in cosmetology.

If you want to teach classes in, “Theory,” or “Methods of Teaching,” you can do so with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in education or board approved expertise in the education field.
