You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

Make-Up Artist Licensing in Oklahoma

In order to obtain your License in Esthetics, you have to Train at an Accredited School for 600 Hours. To obtain your License in Cosmetology, you have to Train at an Accredited School for 1500 Hours. Once you have completed your desired Training, you must sit for your Written and Practical Exams. Once you pass your exams, the State of Oklahoma Board of Cosmetology will issue your License. Though some Cosmetology and Esthetics programs will give you a solid foundation in Make-Up Artistry, most will not. Therefore, it is best to complete a Specialized Course on top of this.

Once you have obtained your license, and attended some form of Specialized Training in Make-Up Artistry, you can begin to work part or full time as an Esthetician or Cosmetologist and freelance as a Make-Up Artist during evenings and weekends for special events, or you can try to pursue Make-Up Artistry as a full time career.

License Renewals

Currently, Specialized Certificate Courses in Make-Up do not require renewal. In order to renew your Cosmetologist’s or Esthetician’s License in Oklahoma, you must pay $25 every year and renew by your birth month. You don’t have to take any Continuing Education classes in order to renew your License, however, CEU credits will enhance your resume and ensure that when the right opportunity comes along, you will be qualified for it.

License Transfers

If you have an Esthetics License or a Cosmetologist License from another state, you can work in Oklahoma as long as you meet some basic requirements. Your Training and Testing must be equivalent to or greater than the Training and Testing required by Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Board also likes you to have at least three years of Licensed Work Experience.

The Board might consider your Licensed Work Experience in excess of three years as a form of additional Training. If you have a lot of Work Experience and very little Training, the Board will ask you to sit for the State Written and Practical Exams. If you have very little Testing, Training and Work Experience, the Board will ask you to complete additional Training and take the State Written and Practical Exams.
