Barbering Programs in New Jersey

Sometimes barbering is its own program, but some schools like Shore Beauty School combine it with the cosmetology program, since the skills necessary to be a barber are similar – and in some aspects – the same as they are in a cosmetology program.

You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

In fact, if a student in New Jersey opts to earn a degree in cosmetology, he or she will learn the actual skills that are needed to cut, style, curl, straighten and dye hair. Students will receive training on shaving with a straight-blade razor, working with hair pieces and how to give scalp massages. When prospective barbers choose to go through the cosmetology program, he or she will learn skincare and nailcare, which prepares students more by teaching them a broader range of skills. Instruction on subjects like bacteriology, safety and sanitation will be taught as well.
