In fact, if a student in New Jersey opts to earn a degree in cosmetology, he or she will learn the actual skills that are needed to cut, style, curl, straighten and dye hair. Students will receive training on shaving with a straight-blade razor, working with hair pieces and how to give scalp massages. When prospective barbers choose to go through the cosmetology program, he or she will learn skincare and nailcare, which prepares students more by teaching them a broader range of skills. Instruction on subjects like bacteriology, safety and sanitation will be taught as well.

Licensing Requirements in New Jersey

The New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling states that in 1984 the cosmetology and the barbering boards combined, so there’s no longer a separate license for barbering. In order to become a cosmetologist, barber or hairstylist in New Jersey, a person must be at least 17 years old. An individual must have proof that he or she completed high school or the equivalent of it. Additionally, a person must complete at least 1,200 hours of instruction in a cosmetology program that’s approved by the Board in order to be eligible to take the licensing exam. The program can be in NJ, in another state or even in another country as long as it offers a similar curriculum as schools in NJ.

Job and Employment Outlook for Barbers in New Jersey

The job outlook for cosmetologists is expected to grow at a rate of 14 percent by 2020, as shown by information provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of jobs for cosmetologists as per 1,000 jobs is 4.15. New Jersey is actually one of the top states for the highest concentration of jobs in the field of cosmetology. The New York-White Plains-Wayne, NY-NJ Metropolitan Division is on the list of the top metropolitan areas with the highest employment rate for these individuals. The statistics for both do not take into consideration the number of self-employed cosmetologists.
