Cosmetologist Licensing Requirements in Montana

For those who wish to obtain a cosmetology license in Montana, there is a requirement that students complete 2,000 hours of coursework, instruction and examinations. For a barber license, the requirement is 1,500 hours. Estheticians must complete 650 hours of training and coursework. A massage therapist must obtain at least 500 hours of training and coursework before he or she can obtain a license. If one is interested in obtaining a permanent makeup license, then he or she should get in touch with the Department of Public Health & Human Services in Montana.

One may obtain the renewal of a license every two years in Montana. Cosmetologists will need to pay a fee of $80 in order to renew a license. Before a cosmetologist’s license may be renewed, he or she must acquire at least 30 continuing education credits. A cosmetology instructor is required to obtain at least 60 continuing education credits before renewing a license. A cosmetologist may only acquire up to 10 credits a year by attending trade shows.
