You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

The typical Montana cosmetology instructor training program takes about one year to complete. You may choose to pursue a part-time program if you are currently supporting yourself or working as a cosmetologist. The part-time program may take about two years to complete and you should consider this when looking at school options. You will be able to gain experience in evaluating students before going out in the cosmetology education field. Your instructors will help you learn new ways to encourage students in improving their abilities in hair cutting, hair styling, sanitation, shampooing, salon management and other aspects of cosmetology.

Licensing Requirements for Cosmetology Instructors in Montana

The Montana State Board of Cosmetology requires that you have a license to practice as a cosmetology instructor. You must also have a current cosmetologist license and gain at least 650 training hours in an approved cosmetology instructor training program. In addition, the Board also requires that you have at least one year of active work experience before enrolling in a cosmetology program. You must renew a cosmetology instructor license every two years in Montana for a fee of $95. Every year, as a cosmetology instructors, you are required to earn 30 continuing education credits. This means that instructors must have a total of 60 continuing education credits before renewing a license. A total of 10 continuing education credits may be earned by attending trade shows.

Cosmetology Instructor Employment Opportunities in Montana

Vocational education teachers tend to earn an excellent salary in Montana of about $60,000 a year. The BLS reports that this salary is also expected to increase in the next few years. There is a demand for licensed cosmetology instructors in the state, so there is also great potential for you to earn an excellent salary.
