You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

You will receive a 01 certification upon graduation from a cosmetology instructor training program in Missouri. During the program, you will gain the technical skills that you need to provide lectures and individually work with students to help them refine their hair styling skills. Your courses will include lesson planning, student evaluations, teaching principles, human psychology, student motivation and classroom management.

Your instructor training program will also prepare you for success on the Missouri State Board Instructor Exam. Established instructors will help you prepare for the process of becoming a licensed teacher in Missouri. Tuition costs tend to be low in Missouri, and your fees are typically $2,500 to $3,500 for the year. This figure includes the cost of student activity fees and textbooks. For the full-time program, you will sit in classes for 35 hours a week and attend class from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For the part-time program, you will attend classes for 23 hours a week.

Licensing Requirements for Cosmetology Instructors in Missouri

The Missouri State Board of Cosmetology requires that you have a current cosmetology license in Missouri before becoming a cosmetology instructor. In addition, you  must also complete at least 600 credit hours in an approved cosmetology program within the state. The Missouri Code requires that an instructor’s training contain both theoretical and practical components. You should make sure that a cosmetology instructor training program offers the following required courses: teaching principles, curriculum planning, class outlines, lesson planning, teaching methods, testing and evaluation. These are the courses listed in the Missouri Code that are required for proper instructor licensure. Additionally, you need at least 50 hours of salon management and 50 hours of psychology applied to the cosmetology field.

Employment Opportunities in Missouri for Cosmetology Instructors

The BLS states that vocational education teachers have the potential to earn a median salary of $48,880 a year. The starting salary for a cosmetology instructor is about $38,000 a year in Missouri. After being in the field some time, if you gain tenure as a cosmetology instructor you may earn a salary that exceeds $48,000 a year. In Missouri, you have the option to only teach on a part-time basis or teach a single course.  If that is the case, you can expect to earn hourly wages that amount to $20 an hour.
