Licensing Requirements in Minnesota

The Minnesota State Board of Cosmetology requires that students successfully complete a program at a licensed cosmetology school in order to sit for the board exams. Upon graduation from a program, a student will need to also pass the written exams that are administered by the Minnesota State Board of Cosmetology. A student will also need to obtain a total of 1,550 hours of instruction and training to receive a cosmetologist license. To become a barber, students will need to contact the Minnesota State Board of Cosmetology for requirements. An esthetician license requires a total of 600 hours of training and instruction.

A cosmetologist license must be renewed every three years. The cost of renewing a license is $114. Cosmetologists do not need to obtain continuing education credits to renew their licenses.
