Life is an endless struggle full of frustrations and challenges, but eventually you find a hair stylist you like.  ~Author Unknown

The typical curriculum at beauty schools in Michigan can offer you fundamental skills in nail care, hair waxing, hair care, hair styling, hair weaving, hair coloring, bleaching, professional etiquette, lab work, salon management and spa treatments.

These schools can offer you the quality education that you seek to become a licensed cosmetologist. By contacting several schools, you can compare the statistics associated with each school, such as its job placement rate, cost, and the employers the schools may work with. This information can empower you to make the right choice in selecting a beauty school for your education. You may also wish to see whether you can earn any additional certificates from other programs that are offered at the cosmetology school, such as for laser hair removal or nail art.

Cosmetologist Licensing in Michigan

The Michigan State Board of Cosmetology requires that you attend a licensed cosmetology school in order to become a cosmetologist. You must also complete a certain number of training hours for each type of beauty license, and you may not substitute an apprenticeship in lieu of attending beauty school. To become a cosmetologist, you will need to complete a total of 1,500 hours of instruction, coursework and examinations. To become an esthetician or nail tech, you will need to complete 400 hours of instruction and other training. A barber license currently requires that you obtain 2,000 hours of instruction and training.

Cosmetologist licenses must be renewed every two years, and the cost is $48 to renew a license. A cosmetologist does not need to earn continuing education credits to renew a license.
