Nail Technician Licensing Requirements in Massachusetts

In order to become a licensed nail technician in Massachusetts, one must first undergo at least one month of study that includes 100 hours of professional training at a beauty school that has been approved by the Massachusetts Board of Cosmetology. After completion of this requirement, an individual may apply for licensure with the Board of Cosmetology. The applicant will be granted licensure upon successful completion of an examination administered by the Board. Licensed manicurists can be employed at salons throughout the state, and licensure must be periodically renewed.

Employment Outlook for Nail Technicians in Massachusetts

A job as a nail technician in the state of Massachusetts can provide an individual with a great deal of opportunity and independence in his or her work. Nail technicians can work for salons in the state and expect to earn between $9 and $12 and hour. However, after some on-the-job experience, an individual may be able to increase his or her earnings by building up a clientele and possibly opening an independent salon in the future. Earnings for those who successfully open up their own salons can be quite high. The job market for nail technicians is expected to grow at about 17% through 2020. This is about as fast as the average projected growth for all occupations according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
