School Accreditation

You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

Each barber program will have unique courses that are offered, but they will most likely teach the same core curriculum. These courses usually require students to master skills in the art of shaving, maintaining sanitary barber shops, understanding laws and regulations in Louisiana and hair styling techniques.

Overview of Barbering Schools and Curriculum in Louisiana

These barber schools may give students the opportunity to pursue a dual certification. Students may be able to receive a barber certification along with a cosmetology, manicurist or massage therapy certification. To find out more information about the courses and programs offered at a barber school, students should get in touch with an admissions officer. An admissions officer can also answer questions regarding tuition rates, the availability of financial aid, scholarships and extracurricular activities that are offered at the school. Students can learn about ways to get involved and meet other established barbers in various cities of Louisiana. You may schedule an in-person interview or phone interview with an admissions officer to get started in having your questions answered.

When choosing a school, be sure to ask the following questions before enrolling:

– What is the career placement rate at your school?
– What skills with the courses teach me?
– Do you offer business-focused classes or information for students who want to run their own shops?
– Do you offer financial aid or scholarships?
– Which employers typically hire your graduates?

Also, come up with your own list of questions that pertain directly to your goals. This is also why it is important to compare several schools before making a decision.

Barber Licensing Requirements in Louisiana

To become a barber in Louisiana, students will need to graduate from a licensed barber school. The Louisiana Board of Cosmetology does not accept apprenticeship hours in lieu of actual credit hours from a licensed barber school. Students are required to obtain at least 1,500 hours of instruction and coursework during their time in a barber program. Passing a written examination is also required for students after they have completed a barber program.

A barber license must be renewed every year in Louisiana. In-state barbers need to pay a fee of $25 to renew their licenses. Barbers from outside of the state will have to pay $50 to renew their licenses. Barbers do not need to complete continuing education credits in order to receive a renewal of their licenses in Louisiana.

There are certain states in which Louisiana will not accept a transfer application for licenses, and the Louisiana Board of Cosmetology maintains a continually updated list of these states.

Job and Employment Outlook for Barbers in Louisiana

The average salary of barbers in Louisiana is about $26,810 a year. Barbers in Louisiana make significantly more than the national average salary. In the United States, a barber typically earns about $22,500 in a given year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

However, your success will vary on the decisions you make about your career, including: how many hours per week you work, how many clients you take on, what kind of salon you work at – or if you run your own business.
