Licensing Requirements for Cosmetology Instructors in Iowa

Iowa has strict regulations in regards to the practice of cosmetology instruction in the state. You must obtain a license in order to serve as a cosmetology instructor in Iowa. You may also only work within a licensed cosmetology school to instruct students. The State Iowa Board of Cosmetology requires that you submit proof of completion of at least 1,000 hours of training in your specific discipline. If you wish to offer instruction in electrology, in addition to cosmetology, you must complete an additional 60 hours of practical application.

Every two years, as a licensed cosmetology instructor, you must also obtain eight hours of continuing education credits. There is a license application fee of $50 that also includes exam fees.
