School Accreditation

You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

Pursuing your cosmetology instructor education will help you receive a certification that you will hold for the rest of your life. This certification can enable you to teach a breadth of cosmetology courses to students. You can teach courses like hair styling, nail technology, esthetics and professional etiquette to your students. If your students require assistance in helping clients during a clinical appointment, then you will also have the skills and knowledge necessary to help them.

Licensing Requirements for Cosmetology Instructors in Indiana

In Indiana, you must complete certain requirements in order to become a licensed cosmetology instructor in the state. You must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school degree. The Indiana Board of Cosmetology requires that you complete at least 1,000 credit hours in an approved beauty instructor program and achieved at least a 70 percent passing score on the written and practical licensing exam. The Board will allow you to submit reciprocity applications, but the Board makes licensure determinations on an individual basis. The Board will want to see that the licensure requirements in another jurisdiction are similar to the requirements in Indiana before it approves a license. You should also be sure to submit an application for licensure within three years of graduation from an approved beauty instructor program.
