School Accreditation

You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

You can almost always find a new salon that is hiring or find clients that will need services. You can also have a home office or take your business on the go and meet clients in their homes or places of business. This can be quite convenient for clients and in some cities, you can demand higher fees for this service.

Overview of Cosmetology Schools and Curriculum in Alabama

As a cosmetology school student, you will definitely learn how to care for and style both male and female hair. As a barber student, you will learn to style and care for male hair exclusively. In other aspects of the industry, you will learn how to care for and design nails, how to care for and do special treatments on the skin and, in the case of massage, how to help and heal the body itself. In addition to these things, you will learn other things including sanitation, business practices and professional presentation.

Cosmetologist Licensing in Alabama

You have to attend cosmetology schools in Alabama that are accredited order to be eligible to take the test for licensing throughout the state. Each specialization will require a different hourly commitment. Once you complete your class hours, you will take your exam and then you will be licensed very soon after. The licensing requirements are as follows:

Cosmetology – 1500 Hours
Esthetician – 1500 Hours
Nail Technician – 600 Hours
Cosmetology Instructor – You must have had your license for one year, and complete 300 Hours of additional training.
Massage Therapist – 650 Hours

All personal care professionals must renew their licenses every year in their birthday month on odd numbered years (Ex. 2013, 2015). Renewals cost $80 and you are not required to take any additional classes. However, if you do not keep up with current trends within the industry, your career might suffer, so it’s a good idea to take at least one or two classes every year.

Alabama does not accept reciprocity from other states. If you would like to move your license to the state of Alabama, contact the Alabama Board of Cosmetology to apply for a license. They will then begin you on the process of obtaining your license in Alabama.
