Education Requirements for Becoming an Esthetician in Washington

The cosmetology industry is all about helping people feel and look like the best version of themselves. It should come as no surprise that esthetics is growing extremely quickly in this industry, since beautiful, healthy skin can make anyone look young and full of life.
When you decide on a career in esthetics, you get to explore a huge variety of techniques, tools, and products that are used to improve skin. By the time you complete your training, you should be confident in your ability to use these techniques and products appropriately.

Since esthetics is a licensed field, you must meet state esthetician license requirements in Washington before you can work independently with clients. The majority of these requirements cover education and testing. To apply for a license, you must attend a school that explores the following topics:

• Skin compresses, wraps, masks, and chemical compounds
• Massage
• Exfoliation
• Electrical and mechanical facials
• Manual facials
• Anatomy and physiology
• Temporary hair removal
• Skin diseases and disorders
• First aid

In each course you take, you can learn hands-on skills that make you a better esthetician. You may also explore the business side of the beauty industry. You can look forward to exploring topics like those listed here:

• Waxing, tweezing, and threading
• Proper maintenance of work stations
• Customer service, ethics, and standards

As the beauty industry continues to grow, the demand for licensed, highly skilled professionals may continue to grow. Find a career you love by contacting Washington esthetics programs below.

Washington Esthetician License Requirements

Once you have completed your training hours, the rest of the licensing process moves fairly quickly. The Washington State Department of Licensing is responsible for setting, changing, and enforcing esthetician license requirements in WA.

You can register for your licensing exams once you have submitted proof of your training hours to the Department of Licensing. At this point, the Department of Licensing double checks your training hours and collects several fees, listed here:

• $25 licensing fee
• $60 written testing fee and $120 practical testing fee
• Fees paid via credit card online; mailed forms must be paid with check or money order
• 750 training hours or 800 apprenticeship hours required

Stringent WA esthetician license requirements are a big part of the beauty industry’s success. While the process may seem lengthy, it gives licensing officials the chance to verify that every beauty professional in the state is properly trained, ready to work with customers, and safe while working independently. This minimizes the amount of poorly trained practitioners in the field, improving public perception of cosmetology.

How to Get Your Washington Esthetician’s License Renewed

To continue working in Washington, you must renew your license every two years. You do not have to earn any continuing education units, but continuing education is highly recommended if you want to thrive in this industry. You must submit your renewal application with a payment of $55 every two years by your original licensure date. Renewing on time protects you from additional fees and paperwork requirements.

A career in beauty gives you the chance to work in a fast-paced setting while providing treatments and services that help customers feel good about themselves. Learn more about earning a Washington esthetician license by reaching out to schools on our list below.
