Education Requirements for Becoming an Esthetician in Illinois

Are you looking for a beauty career that makes the most of your skills, gives you the chance to work in a variety of settings, and involves cool new technology? When you get an Illinois esthetics license, you can master popular skin care procedures, learn about newly developed techniques, and find out what your customers want when they sit down in your chair.

On any given work day, you may carry out many different procedures. That’s why esthetician training in Illinois is so thorough.

To qualify for an IL esthetician license, you must attend a program that meets these guidelines:

• History of skin care, hygiene and public health, professional ethics, sterilization and sanitation, and skin analysis (75 hours)
• Anatomy and physiology, bacteriology, histology, and chemistry (150 hours)
• Massage, health of skin, skin analysis, skin cleansing, facial treatments, mask therapy, electricity, hair removal, and professional makeup techniques (500 hours)
• Illinois laws and statutes, management, and OSHA (25 hours)

Of course, since the field of esthetics is so large, you may cover many skills and topics not listed in state statutes. One option your school may offer is an internship program. Illinois allows you to spend up to 75 hours of your training in an approved internship program.

Other topics you may study in esthetician school include:

• Microdermabrasion
• Different types of facials
• Color theory for makeup
• Hair removal, including waxing and tweezing

When you finish your education, it’s time to move on to the rest of the licensing process. Get more information on this process by reaching out to esthetics programs in Illinois.

Illinois Esthetician License Requirements

By the time you finish your esthetics education, you’ll likely be ready and excited to start your career! However, you still have a few more steps to complete before you get your Illinois esthetician license.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation oversees esthetician licensure, so you’ll submit your application, school paperwork, and other forms to them.

They follow these guidelines with regard to esthetician licensure in Illinois:

• $180 testing fee
• Fees paid by MasterCard or Visa
• $30 licensing fee
• 750 training hours

With 750 required training hours, Illinois esthetician license requirements are in line with national averages. The time you spend getting licensed protects the industry from untrained hobbyists and protects customers from the damage that they may cause. This builds on the strong reputation enjoyed by the beauty industry.

How to Get Your Illinois Esthetician’s License Renewed

If you plan on continuing your career in Illinois, you must keep following the licensing standards of the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. All license renewal forms must be submitted by September 30 of every even-numbered year. To renew your license, you must complete 10 hours of continuing education. The current renewal fee is set at $50. Renewing your license on time saves you from extra fees and allows you to keep working as an esthetician.
