Education Requirements for Cosmetologists in North Carolina

You’re looking for a career, but you don’t want to spend 40 hours a week sitting behind a desk, waiting for the clock to hit 5:00 every day. You want a job that makes the days fly by and gives you something new to look forward to every day.

This is what the field of cosmetology offers you. From day to day, your appointments and your clients’ needs can change. The North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners is the government agency that oversees licensing of cosmetologists in this state. If you want to earn an NC cosmetology license and start a rewarding career in this industry, you’ll need to meet the training expectations of this agency.

The training hour requirements in North Carolina are split into two areas.

First, you complete a beginning course of 300 hours. You complete the rest of your education in a 1200-hour advanced training course. Your curriculum must cover the following topics, and you have to complete the amount of services listed in parentheses to get a license:

• Scalp and hair treatments (10 treatments)
• Fingerwaving and styling (10 treatments)
• Pincurling and styling (10 treatments)
• Hairstyling (170 treatments)
• Haircutting (85 treatments)
• Chemical reformation (35 treatments)
• Temporary color (2 treatments)
• Color application (40 treatments)
• Multidimensional color (25 treatments)
• Lash and brow color (2 treatments)
• Nail care (15 treatments)
• Artificial nail sets (10 treatments)
• Makeup application (2 treatments)
• Hair removal (5 treatments)

By meeting the training requirements outlined above, you can learn all the skills needed in cosmetology and feel confident about your ability to carry them out independently.

North Carolina Cosmetology License Requirements

By far, training is the most time-consuming part of getting a cosmetology license. However, there are other North Carolina Board of Cosmetology license requirements you have to meet. Shortly after graduation, you take a written test and a skills test. You must earn passing scores on both to get your license.

These are the fees and standards associated with cosmetology licensure in this state:

• $79 practical examination fee and $69 written examination fee
• Fees paid by credit card or money order
• $49 application fee
• 1500 hours of education required
• Tests administered by NIC

The licensing process of North Carolina upholds the high standards of the beauty industry. By requiring all students to meet the same expectations for an NC state cosmetology license, salon and beauty shop owners can feel confident hiring licensed cosmetologists.

Requirements for Renewing Your Cosmetology License in North Carolina

The North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners has strict license renewal requirements in place. Requiring cosmetologists to renew their licenses on a regular basis ensures that everyone who calls themselves a licensed cosmetologist is still working and growing in the field.

License renewal in North Carolina runs on a three-year cycle. You must renew your license by October 1 every three years. This involves paying a $49 licensing fee. During each renewal cycle, you must earn 24 continuing education credits. This works out to eight credits per year. You can select approved events through the State Board of Cosmetology NC.
